SSE Telecoms appoints new MD

SSE Telecoms has appointed Colin Sempill as managing director. Colin will succeed SSE Telecoms’ current managing director, Chris Jagusz, who is leaving the company in September 2014.

In his new role as managing director, Colin will be responsible for accelerating the very significant rate of progress achieved in the recent past. In the past year, SSE Telecoms has completed an extensive network expansion project, dubbed Project Edge, which has ensured that its high-bandwidth, high availability network services are readily available to the UK’s most demanding enterprises. Project Edge added 62 new Points of Presence (PoPs) to SSE Telecoms’ 13,700Km UK fibre network, creating a new total of 234 PoPs serving over 200,000 metropolitan business postcode areas. SSE Telecoms also introduced the LIGHTNOW service – a new ultra-resilient optical networking service providing customer connectivity between 21 of London’s busiest data centres with 10Gb Ethernet wavelengths, all deliverable within an industry leading seven day timeframe. The new Edge Plus service cost effectively extends SSE Telecoms own network footprint to all parts of the UK using best-of-breed fibre services in each geographic region.

Colin is a proven leader of high growth, rapidly transforming businesses. In his last post, Colin was SSE’s group strategy and transformation director. In recent history at SSE, Colin has held several senior posts. He has been a member of the retail leadership team for the last three years, a business that typically delivers an annual operating profit of around £300m. Colin was also SSE’s director of organisational development from 2008-2010 and was head of strategic change from 2005-2008.

"I am delighted to welcome Colin to the SSE Enterprise management team and to the SSE Telecoms business,” said Jim McPhillimy, managing director, SSE Enterprise. "Colin has all the qualities needed to make a success of this new role and his appointment demonstrates the company's wider ambitions for the SSE Telecoms business. Finally, I would also like to thank Chris for his exceptional contribution and to wish him well in his new role as MD of one of SSE Telecoms’ largest customers.”

“I look forward to continuing the excellent progress achieved by the SSE Telecoms team over recent years,” said Colin Sempill, SSE Telecoms’ newly appointed managing director. “I am thrilled to take on this new role and look forward to leading SSE Telecoms into the next phase of accelerated growth. The quality of our people, network coverage and our world class network service technologies position us really well to meet the rapidly evolving needs of enterprise customers that are critically dependent on their connectivity services.”
