RETN, an independent global network service provider, has introduced a new backbone route connecting Tallinn in Estonia with Cēsis in Latvia. The connection forms part of RETN’s network expansion initiatives aimed at increasing connectivity across Northern and Central Europe.
Before entering full service, the route was activated during a fiber break on the primary path in late 2025. The disruption required traffic to be transferred from the affected backbone to the newly established Tallinn–Cēsis route.
During the incident, engineers rerouted more than 40 DWDM backbone channels across multiple European segments within approximately one hour. In infrastructure-dependent environments, similar disruptions can require extended recovery times depending on repair conditions.
Throughout the transition, key performance metrics such as latency and jitter were maintained, demonstrating the operational readiness of the new route under live traffic conditions.
The Tallinn–Cēsis backbone adds an alternative terrestrial pathway between Finland and the Nordics and Central Europe. It reduces reliance on a single fiber supplier and provides additional routing options to support network redundancy and resilience.
RETN has also established a new Core Point of Presence (PoP) at the Greenergy Data Centre in Tallinn. The PoP enables local delivery of RETN’s network services and adds capacity of up to 40TBps, supporting service scalability and continued operations during network events or disruptions.
Modern network infrastructures require built-in resilience to manage potential outages. The Tallinn–Cēsis route is designed with route and supplier diversity to enable traffic redirection when necessary without significant performance impact.
The expansion reflects ongoing network development to support connectivity across Europe.
Through the introduction of the Tallinn–Cēsis backbone and the new PoP in Tallinn, RETN has expanded its network infrastructure to enhance redundancy and capacity within its European footprint.
