Staff from power protection specialists Riello UPS are gearing up for an epic test of endurance to support a cherished colleague, Peter Walthall, diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). This arduous 40-mile fundraising trek from their Wrexham Industrial Estate head office to the renowned Vale Park stadium of Port Vale Football Club in Burslem, Staffordshire, is in aid of the MND Association.
Peter, aged 58, from Cheadle, Staffordshire, has dedicated over 11 years to the company and is continuing his role as Project Manager with unwavering determination. This journey will stand as a mark of solidarity with Peter, a lifelong Port Vale fan. The final destination, Vale Park, holds a special significance for Peter, who has cherished over five decades supporting the team and more than two decades of holding a season ticket.
The main group of intrepid Riello UPS employees will embark on this sponsored walk, scheduled over two days [Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September], with an overnight camp. An inspiring show of support, many of Peter’s colleagues, family, and friends will join in a 'Riello UPS Relay' at various points along the way.
To coincide with Port Vale’s League One home fixture against Mansfield Town on Saturday 20 September, the trek will conclude in celebration and hope.
Further adding to the effort, Riello UPS staff members from other regional branches in Letchworth, Fareham, and Cumbernauld will find their own ways to participate. Each branch has set up treadmills to help team members complete the equivalent distance.
Leo Craig, Managing Director of Riello UPS Ltd, emphasizes Peter’s popularity and respect within the team, which made his diagnosis a hefty blow. However, Peter’s and his family’s resilience remains an inspiration, a reflection of his character, and the MND Association has provided invaluable support to them.
Leo’s words resonate with gratitude as he acknowledges the vital role played by the MND Association in offering advice and assistance to families affected by MND. The charity is celebrated as Riello UPS’s Charity of the Year for 2025.
Additionally, Port Vale Football Club’s assistance in facilitating the trek is applauded, as is the team’s determination to trek from Wrexham to Port Vale, raising awareness and funds in the process.
