Nokia partners with ProRail for railway communication infrastructure modernisation

In a global first, Nokia partners with ProRail to modernise its railway communication infrastructure, enhancing safety, efficiency, and innovation in rail services.

Nokia has partnered with ProRail, the operator of the Netherlands' railway infrastructure, to embark on a groundbreaking deployment of a cloud-native Global System for Mobile Communications for Railway (GSM-R) core network. This move aims to revolutionise ProRail's communication systems, enhancing safety and service reliability for millions of passengers. Crucially, this venture lays the foundation for the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), which promises even greater efficiency and security.

The project is part of a four-year modernisation initiative designed to extend the lifespan of ProRail’s existing 2G infrastructure. By leveraging cloud-native technology, ProRail anticipates significant improvements in railway operations, seamless tech integration, reduced long-term costs, and enhanced decision-making through real-time data exchange.

“It is good to see that our partner Nokia is still investing substantially in the development of GSM-R. With the migration towards a cloud-native core network we lay the basis for the next 10 years of GSM-R operation and prepares us for FRMCS,” said Geert Laureijssen, Manager Mobile Communications, ProRail.

Supported by Nokia Cloud Platform, ProRail will experience a full spectrum of services, including the Nokia Assurance Center, Packet Core, and Data Center Fabric. Additionally, upgrades to the MantaRay Network Management, Archive Cloud, and Nokia Network Services Platform are scheduled. These enhancements are designed to render ProRail's communications more agile and efficient.

The shift to a cloud-native architecture reflects a commitment to environmental sustainability and preparedness for emerging rail technologies. ProRail’s migration indicates European rail operators' aspirations towards future-focused communications as part of the ongoing digital transformation across the industry.

Currently, GSM-R is the benchmark for railway communication, offering secure, reliable pathways for train command and control operations. By transitioning to a cloud-native infrastructure, operators like ProRail are strategically positioned to tap into improved data synergies, simplify integration processes, and progress towards adopting FRMCS. This transformation not only assures operational robustness but also sets a precedent for other European rail operators.
