Manchester data centre invests £1.5 million into energy efficiencies

TeleData installs smart energy battery storage system to reduce carbon footprint.

Manchester data centre operator, TeleData UK Ltd, has invested £1.5 Million in a new battery storage system to enhance energy efficiencies at its facility close to Airport City in Wythenshawe.

The solution, which has been designed and deployed by leading smart energy solutions provider, Powerstar, will enable TeleData to store electricity from the national grid at times of low demand and discharge it during the most beneficial periods, acting as a reserve during peak tariff times. The new system will also offer integrated variable voltage optimisation to deliver a stabilised voltage, thus boosting the resilience of the facility by improving the shelf life of equipment, while reducing unnecessary energy waste and optimising the incoming power supply.

Matthew Edgley, Commercial Director for TeleData said: “In line with Manchester’s pledge to reduce CO2 levels by 41% by 2020, it is our mission to provide a sustainable and resilient service to our customers, mitigating against future cost increases to future proof in a turbulent marketplace.

“As well as enhanced resilience and improved energy efficiencies, the new battery storage system will allow us to better insulate customers against future energy price rises through energy optimisations.”

TeleData, which provides colocation and cloud hosting services to businesses across the UK, states that the new smart energy technologies delivered from Powerstar should reduce its carbon footprint by up to 10% by 2020. Combined with other energy efficiencies recently implemented, the figure will be close to 45% compared to pre-2017.

Commenting on the project, Powerstar’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Alex Mardapittas, said: “We are incredibly proud to have been chosen to deliver this project for TeleData. It demonstrates the value of implementing a complete, integrated solution, comprised of multiple technologies, to provide tangible benefits to businesses and support their core activities and energy objectives.

“Utilising our engineering expertise, we delivered a bespoke solution to TeleData’s site in Manchester that has been developed specifically to the requirements and characteristics of the site, providing a comprehensive solution complete with remote monitoring so TeleData can view the various assets’ performance and operation in real-time.”
