Silver Peak turbo charges AWS

The latest version of the company’s Cloud Acceleration service offers a single-click way of boosting data transfers for Amazon Web Services users

One of the potential drawbacks of using cloud services is the issue of latency. Moving data between systems does have physical time constraints, with a direct correlation between distance and time. That is one of the key reasons why many experts suggest that some time-dependent tasks, particularly in applications areas such as financial transactions where millisecond delays can cost real money, are still best managed on-premise, or perhaps on tightly-coupled, clustered trading systems.

Anything that can be done to speed up transaction speed across cloud services therefore has a high potential value to users, especially if the services they are running or using are provided via public services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This the latest target for US-based Silver Peak, which specialises in accelerating data over distance, It has just announced that it is now offering cloud acceleration, with a 1-Click launch, on the AWS Marketplace. This allows users to quickly and easily accelerate their Amazon Virtual Private Cloud applications and data transfers by up to 20-times with the click of a mouse.

“Whether you use the AWS cloud for back-ups, business applications or workforce collaboration, new 1-Click launch support for Silver Peak Cloud Acceleration gives users a new level of simplicity and speed for cloud enablement.”

While the Growing Pains in the Cloud study conducted by NTT Communications indicated that 77 percent of CIOs and senior IT leaders report that cloud-based infrastructure is in use in their enterprises, accessing public cloud resources is often done over the Internet because of the cost and convenience advantages. This means coming up against those inherent latency, bandwidth and quality issues.

Silver Peak claims that using its Cloud Acceleration software with AWS solves these challenges to provide better consistency, responsiveness and cost-effectiveness of AWS-hosted applications.

“Your business performance depends on your network performance, and the biggest obstacle to any successful cloud deployment is the wide area network,” said Damon Ennis, SVP of products for Silver Peak. “Whether you use the AWS cloud for back-ups, business applications or workforce collaboration, new 1-Click launch support for Silver Peak Cloud Acceleration gives users a new level of simplicity and speed for cloud enablement.”

Silver Peak Cloud Acceleration for AWS improves data transfer performance while reducing cloud costs. With AWS, traffic charges are predominantly incurred for data moved out of EC2 and between regions. Silver Peak applies byte-level deduplication to identify and eliminate repetitive data patterns from exiting AWS data patterns that would normally increase traffic charges.

By minimizing the amount of data transferred to and from AWS, especially in the case of replicating data for disaster recovery or transferring large files, organisations can save up to 80 percent of their cloud costs. The Silver Peak software is also highly-elastic, and with utility licensing, IT personnel can increase or decrease capacity on-demand based on data mobility requirements.
