Accelerated Big Data performance

Internap Network Services and Aerospike has announced an integrated solution that creates the industry’s first ‘fast big data’ platform by offering Aerospike’s leading NoSQL database on Internap’s AgileSERVER bare-metal cloud. The combined solution enables developers to quickly deploy applications that demand predictable, high performance in a cost-effective hosted environment. As a result, customers in a range of industries are empowered to make better decisions, faster, by ingesting, storing and analysing terabytes of data from billions of transactions.

The joint Internap-Aerospike fast big data solution combines Internap’s high performance bare-metal cloud – which can deliver up to eight times better server performance over virtualised alternatives – with a pre-configured installation of Aerospike’s flash-optimised, in-memory NoSQL database. Built atop best-of-breed hardware, including high-end solid-state drives (SSDs) and direct attached storage, the scalable, turnkey solution processes and delivers massive amounts of data within milliseconds. For use cases requiring high-bandwidth network connectivity among clustered servers, 10 Gigabit Ethernet to the server is available as an optional add-on.

As part of the joint solution, qualified customers of Aerospike’s free Community Edition can access a two-week free trial of Internap’s bare-metal cloud to test drive the performance difference before purchase.

eXelate Reaps Benefits of Internap-Aerospike Solution
One of the early customers to benefit from the joint Internap-Aerospike solution is eXelate, the smart data company that powers digital marketing decisions worldwide for agencies, platforms, and publishers. eXelate runs Aerospike databases on Internap bare-metal cloud servers with direct attached SSDs in four Internap data centres around the world. Data is synchronised across Internap’s high-bandwidth networks via Aerospike cross-data centre replication. The Aerospike-Internap combination enables eXelate to provide its customers with 8,000 distinct segments of demographic, behavioural and purchase intent data on more than 700 million consumers within strict, 100-millisecond service-level agreements (SLAs), cost-effectively and with 100% uptime.

“As a global big data provider delivering insights that enable digital advertisers to make smarter marketing decisions, we sought a real-time, low-latency cloud platform and a NoSQL database that could deliver reliable data across our global footprint at a reasonable cost to meet massive scale demands of between six to seven billion events per day,” said Elad Efraim, chief technology officer and co-founder, eXelate. “Combining the cost-effective, high performance of Internap’s bare-metal cloud and Aerospike’s NoSQL database, we were able to accomplish programmatic scaling of our infrastructure to support one trillion real-time data transactions monthly for more than 200 marketers and publishers worldwide – giving us an edge to compete in today’s high-speed, data-driven Internet economy.”

Fast Big Data Meets Bare-Metal Cloud
Aerospike is recognised by Gartner, Inc. in the ‘Visionaries’ quadrant of the Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems1 published on October 21, 2013, and it is the user profile store of choice for many of today’s largest online advertising and digital marketing platforms. Implemented in some of the industry’s most data-intensive environments, the Aerospike database is used by customers to personalise consumer interactions across multiple channels, including the web, mobile, search, video, social, gaming and online retail. These revenue-generating, big data-driven applications rely on Aerospike to rapidly read and write user context in order to deliver the most relevant response – faster than the blink of an eye and with zero downtime.

“The Aerospike database is designed to meet the needs of a new class of Internet-scale applications that must personalise consumer interactions based on what customers are doing with their devices right now,” said Srini V. Srinivasan, Aerospike founder and vice president of engineering and operations. “Our integrated solution with Internap’s bare-metal cloud will ease time to market for our customers and allow them to operate at speed and scale twice as cost effectively as they could with virtualised public cloud offerings.”

For applications prone to dynamic traffic patterns that also require the highest levels of performance, reliability and control, Internap’s AgileSERVER bare-metal cloud combines the reliability and performance of dedicated (single-tenant) servers with the convenience and agility of virtualised, multi-tenant public cloud offerings. Internap’s bare-metal cloud supports big data applications better than virtualised cloud alternatives by delivering faster throughput and processing, more consistent performance by removing the ‘noisy neighbour effect’ and more efficient price to performance – with up to 50% cost savings over nominal virtual equivalents.

“Aerospike’s industry-leading, low-latency NoSQL database is the perfect complement to our bare-metal cloud, because it helps expand our solutions into growth markets demanding faster data and decisions to drive better business,” Gopala Tumuluri, vice president of hosted services at Internap. “Internap has always been focused on optimising performance, and together with Aerospike, we are positioned to support customers across a range of industries requiring massive database scale for demanding big data applications to turn insight into action.”
