Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital select AIMES as strategic partner for data centre colocation

Data centre operator and cloud computing specialist, AIMES Grid Services, is supplying the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with disaster recovery and colocation services as part of a five year strategy to host business and mission critical applications within a hybrid cloud. This includes the implementation of the hospital’s electronic patient records (EPR) system.

The EPR project is a major step towards delivering the hospital’s vision for a first-class patient and family experience. By replacing current paper based systems, electronic patient records will enable staff to have all the information they need about a patient’s journey through the hospital in one place, at the touch of a button.


Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital will operate the EPR system from both its main site in the Broadgreen suburb of Liverpool and the AIMES Kilby House data centre to ensure it has the resiliency required for this type of system. The sites will be connected via two separate communications links.
AIMES was appointed on the strength of its technical infrastructure which not only offered the capacity and security required to run such a business critical application but was also proven to be the most cost effective option over the length of the contract.


Completed earlier this year, the award-winning Kilby House data centre was designed and built to be energy efficient, highly secure and commercially competitive. As a result, the business model for AIMES technical solutions offers significant cost savings over those that are delivered in legacy data centre environments.


Dave Murphy, Head of IT, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: “AIMES presented us with a highly compelling business case that has basically made it cost-neutral for us to replicate our EPR system and business applications into the cloud.


“The EPR programme represents a major opportunity for us to improve our patient experience and quality of care. As an IT department, the challenge, therefore, is ensuring the availability and resiliency of a system which will be accessed by around 1000 users every day.


“We must provide solutions that our clinicians and front line staff have absolute confidence in, with guaranteed availability and performance. We are confident that we can do this now that we have AIMES on board as a partner.”


The hospital procured the colocation and disaster recovery services from AIMES through CloudStore, the G-Cloud supplier framework which makes it quicker and cheaper for public sector organisations to purchase cloud IT services. The Government recently announced a ‘Cloud First’ policy that states purchases through the cloud should be the first option considered by public sector buyers of IT products and services.

Kilby House was recently awarded the Private Sector Datacentre Project of the Year Award at the 2013 Datacentre Solutions Awards. Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital’s EPR system goes live later this month across sites in Aintree and Broadgreen.
