Seagate Technology's £100 million nano-photonics investment in Northern Ireland

Seagate unveils a significant investment in Northern Ireland to drive nano-photonics research and data storage innovation, boosting local economy and capacity.

Seagate Technology Holdings plc, a key player in the field of mass-capacity data storage, has committed a substantial £100 million towards nano-photonic innovation in Northern Ireland. This ambitious project stretches over a five-year period benefiting from an additional £15 million support from Invest NI, the region’s economic development agency, to promote local economic growth in Derry/Londonderry and progress Seagate's Mozaic 6+ technology.

As global demand for expansive data storage mounts, propelled by hyperscale data centres and the burgeoning AI data boom, Seagate is on the cutting edge of developing hard drives with unprecedented data capacities. The substantial investments are set to revolutionise hard drive innovation and research at Seagate’s Derry/Londonderry site, heralding a new era of technology.

On the announcement, John Morris, CTO of Seagate Technology, said: “To unlock data’s full potential, we need storage solutions that are not only massive in capacity but engineered for reliability, durability, and scale. That’s exactly what this investment enables. Our Northern Ireland facility is a global centre of excellence, producing over a quarter of the world’s recording heads and pioneering semiconductor laser R&D—critical for next-generation hard drives. With Invest NI’s support, we’re accelerating the development of 60TB and beyond capacities, laying the foundation for achieving 100 TB drives. This project will expand our global engineering expertise and reinforce our long-standing commitment to innovation in Northern Ireland.”

Invest NI has maintained a fruitful collaboration with Seagate for over three decades, nurturing the facility into a world-class manufacturing and R&D Centre. The facility employs 1,500 staff and is one of the largest private sector employers in the Northern West. Invest NI’s support not only secures the development of advanced recording heads and laser technology but also cements Northern Ireland’s role at the forefront of Seagate’s innovation roadmap.

The dual investments promise to create numerous highly skilled jobs within Seagate’s R&D and manufacturing departments while broadening the local supplier network through enhanced material and labour procurement from the community. By merging public and private investments, Seagate aims to harness local expertise, boosting international competitiveness and positioning Northern Ireland as a burgeoning innovation hub.

Northern Ireland's prowess in industry-academia collaboration adds a rich layer to this venture. Efforts to build upon the region’s existing industry base, infrastructure, and academic strengths in photonics are underway, guided by industry leaders including Seagate. Initiatives such as the Smart Nano NI Consortium, focusing on nano-photonics research, epitomise these collaborative efforts, enabling new technologies beneficial to local businesses and research. Seagate’s enduring alliances with local universities, including Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University, play a pivotal role in advancing its R&D capabilities, potentially leading to comprehensive university program growth thanks to additional funding.
