Equinix pioneers next-generation energy solutions for data centres

Equinix partners with energy innovators to future-proof data centre power needs, aiming for 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), recognised globally for digital infrastructure, is actively collaborating with leading energy companies to develop sustainable and reliable electricity solutions for its worldwide data centres, including those across Europe. This initiative forms a segment of Equinix's diversified portfolio power strategy, aimed at reducing future power constraints through novel power generation technologies and next-gen nuclear energy exploration.

The International Energy Agency forecasts a 4% yearly increase in global electricity consumption until 2027, mainly driven by electrification, AI-driven data centre expansion, and industrial manufacturing resurgence. This rising demand could potentially strain utility providers and challenge existing electrical grids.

In response, Equinix adopts a portfolio strategy addressing global energy challenges through advanced power technologies, bolstering grids by funding utility partnerships for reliable enhancements. Notably, Equinix invests in power solutions such as fuel cells and natural gas to ensure operations while augmenting grid capacity.

Looking to the future, the company supports advanced nuclear technologies as reliable clean power sources. Safe, efficient nuclear energy is seen as a viable solution for powering data centres and grids. Several alliances further this commitment:

  • Oklo: Equinix became the first data centre operator in agreement with Oklo for 500MW of energy from their fission powerhouses.
  • Radiant: Pre-order agreements have been established for Radiant's Kaleidos microreactors.
  • ULC-Energy and Rolls-Royce SMR: A significant power agreement supports data centres in the Netherlands.
  • Stellaria: A 500 MWe power agreement assists European data centre expansions.

Equinix also champions the use of advanced fuel cells, notably with Bloom Energy, facilitating onsite power, reducing emissions, and conserving water.

"The potential challenges to powering reliable and sustainable digital infrastructure are considerable," noted Ali Ruckteschler, Senior Vice President at Equinix. He emphasised Equinix's leadership in energy innovation, underpinning AI infrastructure globally.

With a commitment to 100% clean and renewable energy by 2030, Equinix already boasts 96% renewable coverage across its portfolio. Enhancing data centre energy efficiency, the company adopts industry best practices like ASHRAE A1 Allowable standards and plans the widespread implementation of liquid cooling technologies.
