Virtualized video operation helps unlock the full potential of DAA operation

Orange Belgium, a leading Belgian telecoms operator and provider of voice, video, and data services has deployed CommScope’s Video Unified Edge (VUE) platform. The sale is the first for the VUE platform in the European market.

“The VUE sale extends our business relationship with Orange Belgium to include support for the company’s newly deployed Distributed Access Architecture (DAA),” stated Guy Sucharczuk, SVP & president, Access Network Solutions, CommScope. “Whereas we’ve previously supported Orange Belgium’s analog optics network deployments, the VUE sale opens an entirely new way for us to support their network upgrades and business goals. We’re excited to see what comes next for Orange Belgium and CommScope.”

The VUE platform will function as a video core in Orange Belgium’s DAA network, supporting both video data plane and video control plane. The VUE platform operates as an auxiliary video core that virtualizes hardware-based QAM video network in conjunction with a virtualized video plane; QAM processing in a DAA network occurs in a node-based Remote PHY Device (RPD). The VUE platform supports expanded OFDM channel blocks in the downstream, provisions video channels, and encapsulates transport stream video multiplexers into a DEPI tunnel. The VUE platform’s functionality enables Orange Belgium to deliver video content over the DAA portions of its network while also simplifying its current video delivery architecture.

“CommScope’s VUE platform will play an important role in our transition away from our legacy I-CCAP topology,” said Philippe Toussaint, Chief Technology Officer at Orange Belgium. “It’s an extremely flexible solution, which aligns perfectly with our plans to evolve our networks for Cloud and NFV operation. The VUE platform will greatly simplify the migration to these new modes of operation, which will really improve their time to deployment.”
