Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (TEE) has introduced the new Toshiba MG08-D Series Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), designed for a wide variety of business-critical applications including data analysis for business intelligence, small-medium business servers, data-retention and archiving.

Toshiba’s next-generation air-filled mechanical design provides better power efficiency and a lower component count, delivering better total cost of ownership than its earlier generation models. The new MG08-D series is offered in capacities of 4TB, 6TB and 8TB, both for SATA and SAS interfaces. The 4TB drives are available as 512e, 4Kn as well as “legacy 512n” sector models; the 6TB and 8TB drives are delivered as 512e and 4Kn sector models.

“Data centre and enterprise IT engineers currently have to deal with acute cost pressures. While looking to gain new performance levels for their server and data storage deployments, they must also think about reliability and power efficiency,” said Larry Martinez-Palomo, General Manager Storage Products Division, Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH. “The new MG08-D Series drives are based on Toshiba’s next generation Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) technology. Highly versatile, they are compatible with a wide range of operational use cases.”

With a 550TB a year workload rating, the MG08-D Series provides an extensive array of features. These include 7200rpm performance in a 3.5-inch form factor, with a choice of SATA 6Gbit/s or 12Gbit/s SAS interfaces. Compared with Toshiba’s current line-up of 4TB, 6TB and 8TB models of the MG04/05 and MG06 generations, the models of the new MG08-D Series offer a broader range of benefits through the implementation of further technology advances to the MG08 device generation. For example, compared with the previous models[4], the new 4TB models have approximately 23% better maximum sustained transfer speed – reaching 243MiB/s. Their cache buffer size has also been doubled to 256MiB. Operational reliability has been extended too, with the MTTF figure being increased from 1.4 million hours (AFR 0.63%) to 2.0 million hours (AFR 0.43%)[5].. This 2.0 million-hours MTTF is likewise supported by the new 6TB and 8TB MG08-D Series models.
