Council gives ‘green light’ for £1.5b data centre in Dagenham

The Mayor of London’s recent decision to give plans for two data centres in Dagenham the green light has been welcomed by Barking and Dagenham council’s Deputy Leader and cabinet member for Finance, Performance and Core, Councillor Dominic Twomey.

Plans to transform Dagenham East into a digital and media hub have received yet another boost with planning approval agreed for two of the UK’s largest data centres to be built just a stone’s throw from the site of London’s new film studio.

Cllr Twomey said: “I am pleased the Mayor of London’s office has endorsed our decision and given these plans the go-ahead.

“This investment in the borough reinforces that Barking and Dagenham is truly at the heart of London’s eastward growth; and is testament to the council’s ability to attract investors.

“For local people, this news means more jobs across a broad spectrum of industries, not just digital, and more money into the local economy.”

In July this year, Barking and Dagenham Council gave planning consent to NTT to build the data centres. The decision was then referred to Greater London Authority, and last week the Deputy Mayor, Jules Pipe, said he was content to allow Barking and Dagenham Council to make the final decision itself.

The council has now given formal notice to grant permission.
