International law firm Lewis Silkin LLP and business and financial adviser Grant Thornton UK LLP, have launched a new data and cyber security audit service, DataCheckPoint. The partnership and offering is the first-of-its-kind and represents a competitive alternative to services currently in the market.

DataCheckPoint combines the sector-specific knowledge of Lewis Silkin and Grant Thornton in order to offer a service that will fully meet clients’ requirements and objectives. Based on an eight stage process, the audits incorporate a new scoping and gap analysis methodology which caters for innovative reporting and effective compliance implementation programmes.

This new service is designed to help clients prepare for challenges today and in the future, including in the wake of the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Security of Network and Information Systems Directive (NIS Directive). Both pieces of legislation come into force from May 2018.

Cyber security and data breaches rightly weigh heavy on the minds of executives; cyber-crime is estimated to cost the global economy $445bn while the average total cost of a single data breach is estimated to be $4m. In the UK, where two-thirds of businesses have been affected by breaches or attacks, the government has launched a ?1.9bn drive to improve security but, with reform from Europe on the horizon, businesses are facing the prospect of additional compliance as well as risk.
