US Air Force network reaches new heights

Juniper Networks has been selected as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) on four contracts awarded to Affigent and ThunderCat Technology to replace and modernize the U.S. Air Force's network infrastructure. Through respective alliances with prime contractors Affigent and ThunderCat Technology, Juniper Networks switching technology will be installed on Air Force bases to deliver a restructured and open infrastructure for the Base Information Transport Infrastructure (BITI) program.

Juniper Networks technology will streamline operations for the Air Force and support the core and critical access network layers at each base. This includes a technology refresh for the core, distribution, critical access nodes and network management, as well as training and support for the warfighter. Juniper Networks technology will support a total of 44 active duty Air Force bases worldwide for the Base Information Transport Infrastructure (BITI) program.

The Air Force network infrastructure, provided through BITI and powered by Juniper Networks, has 800,000 users worldwide and impacts every airman that's supported by the critical communications capabilities at each base.

Open Networking Standards: With the scale and high performance benefits delivered by Juniper Networks switching solutions, BITI will have an open network that aligns with industry standards, in addition to having the capability to address the growing demand for supplementary bandwidth driven by voice, data and imagery requirements.

Improved Performance, Resiliency and Accessibility: Through its partners Affigent and ThunderCat Technology, Juniper Networks will deliver the switching components and network management for the network element of the BITI program, enabling greater distribution, scalability, automation and user access.

Completion Date: Full deployment will be ongoing, with a goal of completion by September 2016.
