Top global financial services company deploys second phase of all-silicon data centre

In a two-phased rollout, firm reaps the performance benefits of flash storage across its operations.

A major global financial services company has deployed Violin’s Flash Storage Platform (FSP) 7300 arrays for the second phase of a data centre buildout to increase responsiveness to equity traders. In the first phase, the firm replaced its legacy disk-based arrays with the Violin 6000 all-flash arrays to provide high throughput for all critical tier-zero workloads including Oracle databases used to make real-time equity trading recommendations.
In this second phase of the buildout, the firm has extended its investment in Violin’s flash storage technology offerings, using the flash storage platform, to broaden the performance benefits of flash for tier-one primary storage workloads that historically ran on disk.
A key financial driver that created the customer’s phase-two investment to accelerate the deployment economically, was Violin’s 'pay-as-you-grow' model, which enables customers to align storage investment with capacity as it is consumed. Using this model, the customer deployed the FSP 7300 array fully populated with the maximum storage capacity — while enabling them to pay only for the capacity they needed at the time of acquisition. The program provides two primary benefits: 1) customers can upgrade effective capacity nearly instantaneously and at any time through a simple process in which Violin activates additional VIMM memory modules already on the array 2) activating new capacity is non-disruptive, requiring no changes, no downtime and no interruption of daily operations.
“We’re delighted to be selected again as the storage partner of this marquee global firm as they migrate to an all-silicon data centre” said Kevin DeNuccio, CEO, Violin Memory. “Financial services create a myriad of applications in which every enterprise resource must respond with no perceptible delay. In this case, the firm’s traders are ‘consuming’ multiple real-time feeds of market data and analysing those feeds to make smart, instant trading decisions. With the critical need for their analytics to be bulletproof, they have deployed the most reliable and fastest storage underlying their trading and investment decisions, and using Violin’s flash storage foundation equates to money in a financial trade.”
