Amber Rudd MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, officially opened the new server room, which was implemented by server room and data centre design and build specialists Comms Room Services.

Estimates predict that over five years the new server room will save the Trust £112,650 and reduce carbon emissions by 505 tonnes through greater energy efficiency.

Amber Rudd MP said: “Such economic and environmental savings are impressive, and it is encouraging that such an innovative installation is now an example for others in the public sector to follow.”

The new server room has a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) score of 1.04, meaning that the amount of energy used by peripherals such as heating, cooling and lighting is extremely low.

Helen Allingham, Sales Director of Comms Room Services, commented: “East Sussex NHS Trust wanted energy efficient solutions incorporated throughout the upgrade of the server room. In addition, the refurbishment had to carried out in a live server room environment so that the day-to-day running of the hospital was unaffected.

“Using our CoolVap solution, the air is filtered and waste heat is used to dry inbound air so that the room temperature is kept reasonably constant and the ASHREA tolerances are maintained in a stable environment. With lower capital and maintenance costs, the energy and carbon savings and PUE speak for themselves.”

The installation of Coolvap, which provides ‘direct fresh air’ to IT equipment without using refrigerants, will result in 85% less running costs compared to current systems. Other energy efficient features include:

· Separation of cold and hot airflows, reducing energy consumption and improving server reliability
· Raised floor allowing maximum throughput of air into the cold aisle eliminating hot spots
· Stable power environment providing protection and resilience
· Energy efficient LED lighting.

Richard Sunley, Acting Chief Executive of East Sussex Healthcare NHS trust, explained: “It is not an area many people get to see but so much of what our doctors, nurses and others do on the ward relies on technology. This new facility gives us much more security and complies with government efficiency targets by almost halving the energy required to run our data centre.”

Andy Bissenden, Associate IT Director at East Sussex Healthcare NHS, added: “Our previous facility was 30-years-old and was limping along at the end of its life. We now have far more space and have consolidated two data centres into one.”
