Scality and Dell collaborate on software-based storage

Scality has entered into a new relationship with Dell to create a robust solution to high capacity-driven storage challenges by offering the Scality RING petabyte-scale storage software on Dell’s enterprise infrastructure including server, storage, and networking hardware. Through this collaboration, Dell now will offer Scality RING-based solutions built on its Dell PowerEdge server, Dell Storage and Dell Networking portfolio. With this new offering, enterprises can reap the benefits of Scality’s 100 percent reliable, high performance, infinitely scalable, and hardware agnostic software combined with the innovation, quality, reliability, and support they expect from Dell hardware.

“Teaming with Scality further expands our software-defined data center portfolio and leadership as the most forward-looking industry partner for software-defined storage solutions and support,” said Alan Atkinson, vice president and general manager, Dell Storage. “The combined Dell and Scality solution offers multi-petabyte object storage solutions for a wide range of enterprise customers, including cloud service providers, media and entertainment companies, research institutions, telecom providers and more.”

The Scality RING can run on any of Dell’s world-class, enterprise PowerEdge servers, allowing customers the flexibility of several options. Suggested hardware configurations include the Dell PowerEdge R730xd rack server or a combination of the Dell PowerEdge R630 rack server with Dell Storage MD3060e dense enclosures. Scality was selected based on Dell’s in-depth evaluation of technology, vision and market momentum.

“By decoupling hardware and software, we are able to immediately take advantage of hardware innovations, like those found in Dell’s PowerEdge servers, and give our customers the flexibility to mix and match generations and different kinds of servers as they grow their storage pools,” said Erwan Menard, COO of Scality. “With Dell’s long lasting commitment to open standards, and Linux in particular, the Scality RING is paired with a versatile and innovative server portfolio, and our joint customer base has already acknowledged it with several dozens of petabytes deployed. This relationship with Dell is an ideal match, allowing us to offer enterprises the best of both hardware and software, with a one-stop experience.”

The Scality RING is software-based storage that makes storing multitudes of data easy. The RING’s architecture provides reliability, high performance, and operational ease, all of which collectively improve as the system scales massively. Because there’s no qualification process necessary to utilise the RING, customers can use a wide selection of performance and capacity-dense servers, even multiple generations simultaneously. With the RING’s scalability, enterprises can benefit from mixed workload performance, including small and large files, across varying speeds, from single to unlimited interfaces.
