GWDG specializes in advancing scientific research infrastructures, and has a long history operating and administrating parallel computers.

At GWDG, every time a new high performance computing (HPC) project is planned, a new tender is released and hardware is chosen based on its suitability to the project. As a result of this open technology contract, there are often many different types of hardware in operation at the datacenter, most of which include a custom management interface. GWDG is addressing the challenge of simultaneously operating multiple HPC clusters from a number of disparate, non-integrated cluster management platforms, by deploying Bright Cluster Manager® to overarch the entire HPC infrastructure and consolidate their four clusters into a single management platform and view.

Bright’s partner, transtec, provided configuration support to help optimize the solution. transtec’s deep knowledge includes a dynamic combination of benchmarking and installation services. Going forward, whenever a new HPC project is put into operation, it will automatically interoperate with Bright and also be easily managed from Bright’s infrastructure management platform. As a result, GWDG’s HPC clusters are easier to monitor through a central management interface.
