Hyperscale scale-out Object Storage Management Software

Nexenta has announced the general availability (GA) of NexentaEdge®. The award-winning Block and Object Storage platform offers high-performance, simplified management of petabyte-scale repositories, and is the first software-only scale out storage solution to deliver cluster-wide inline deduplication and compression. NexentaEdge is optimised to support OpenStack clouds, object based active archives and Big Data applications.

“Big Data applications, object based active archives and OpenStack cloud environments are driving the need for disruptive new storage solutions, built on scale out clusters of industry standard servers” said Thomas Cornely, Chief Product Officer at Nexenta. “OpenStack clouds in particular require both high performance block services and extremely scalable object repositories. NexentaEdge is unique in its ability to concurrently meet these requirements and further drive down storage costs with inline deduplication and compression of all data at any scale.”

NexentaEdge is Software-Defined Storage that runs on shared nothing clusters of low cost industry standard Linux servers. Featuring Intel® Xeon® processors designed for storage workloads, it builds on Nexenta IP and patent pending Cloud Copy on Write (CCOW) technology to break new grounds in terms of performance, reliability, ease of operation and cost efficiencies with market-leading features like cluster-wide inline deduplication, compression, real-time self-balancing, and unlimited instant snapshots and clones.

“Open Source-driven Software Defined Storage is driving a new style of IT in the enterprise,” said Simon Robinson, Research Vice President at 451 Research. “While scale-out object storage holds significant promise as a foundational technology for this new era, adoption is still nascent. NexentaEdge, with its key value-driven architecture, ability to handle a variety of workloads, and replicast technology to ensure efficiency and redundancy, is a potential game-changer. NexentaEdge will have a significant impact on an organisation’s ability to transform their storage infrastructure, lower TCO and make the shift to the Software-Defined Data Centre.”

Key features of NexentaEdge include:
· The only scale-out storage delivering low latency iSCSI Block and high performance Swift and S3 Object Services
· Deployed as a storage service on 10GbE connected clusters of Intel-based Linux servers running Ubuntu, CentOS or RedHat Enterprise Linux
· Innovative ground-up design delivering best in class performance for small random I/O generated by virtual machine boot images in OpenStack Clouds
· Enterprise grade data integrity and unlimited space optimised snapshot and clone capabilities with Cloud Copy On Write.
· The only fully distributed, in-line deduplication and compression of all data ingested in the cluster, at any scale
· Ability to scale storage capacity and performance (I/O per second or throughput) independently of each other, supporting all HDD, hybrid and all SSD configurations
· Low touch operational model with automated capacity and performance balancing that unlike any other solution, keeps large, complex clusters constantly optimised

"As one of the initial adopters of Nexenta OpenSDS, we have enjoyed a special relationship with Nexenta’s engineering team,” said Joe Little, Principal Systems Architect at Stanford University. “With NexentaEdge, we are extremely excited by the addition of a distributed scale-out storage solution deployed on Linux servers to Nexenta’s portfolio and look forward to benefiting from its scalability, performance, and industry leading data reduction capabilities for our internal storage needs.”

“Rising data management challenges are forcing companies to rethink traditional storage options,” said Bev Crair, Vice President, Data Center Group and GM, Storage Group, Intel Corporation. “By deploying scale-out solutions like NexentaEdge on Intel-based servers, customers can increase scalability, use intelligent storage services to improve capacity, and enhance performance, all while meeting the daunting challenges of managing Big Data.”
