The awards aim to reward the achievements of companies in cutting carbon emissions and leading the way in innovative energy use. If successful, Airedale will pick up the gong for ‘Energy Efficient Product of the Year HVAC&R’ for either the SmartCool™ dedicated chilled water precision air conditioning (PAC) system or the TurboChill™ and TurboChill™ FreeCool chiller with low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant R1234ze when the results are announced on 2 December.
The SmartCool™ CW SD/SN/SR (11-233kW) recently won ‘Datacentre Energy Efficiency Product of the Year’ and ‘Commercial Building Services Product of the Year’ in the Data Centre Solutions (DCS) and H&V News 2014 awards respectively. Developed to meet demand for a high performance, ultra energy-efficient, dedicated chilled water PAC system, the SmartCool™ delivers up to 30% more cooling kW/m2 when compared with competitor units, keeping footprint to a minimum and freeing up valuable space for IT equipment.
R1234ze variants of the TurboChill™ and TurboChill™ FreeCool chiller (200-1830kW) combine the benefits of centrifugal compressor part-load efficiency, modulated control and potential for concurrent free-cooling with the addition of hydro-fluoro olefin (HFO) based refrigerant R1234ze to provide a highly sustainable cooling alternative. R1234ze has a 100-year GWP lower than 1, better than CO2, and takes just 16.4 days to break down in the atmosphere compared with 14 years for more traditional refrigerants such as R134a.
Managing Director, Clive Parkman, said: “Airedale has a very successful track record in the design and manufacture of innovative cooling products. Our NPD team uses the latest CAD platforms and virtual engineering techniques such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis in addition to some of the best in-house R&D facilities in Europe to ensure we continue to pave the way when it comes to high performance, energy-efficient cooling solutions. Being first to launch a production range of fully BSI approved chillers with R1234ze well ahead of the impending changes in EU legislation is a prime example of the commitment of our people to meeting customer needs and we were delighted when John Lewis chose the TurboChill™ for its latest, most sustainable store which opened in York this April 2014.”
