Consumers’ digital world at risk because they’re not backing up their data

It is predicted that nearly one trillion digital photographs will be taken this year in Britain. Yet new research from Acronis reveals that one in five (21%) have never backed up their digital devices or don’t do so regularly enough, with only a quarter doing so weekly.

With two thirds (65%) of consumers revealing that their personal data including their photographs are more valuable to them than their device, it is worrying that users are still not backing up their valuable data.

Other key findings from the Acronis 2014 UK Consumer survey include:
· Two thirds (66%) admit to storing all or some of their content digitally (music/pictures/videos)
· Over 1 in 5 (22%) people admit to having their device lost, stolen or damaged
· Nearly two thirds (61%) would be upset about losing their personal photos
· Of those that do back up, only 24% had backed up in the last week
· Almost half (42.5%) of consumers still backup their data on USBs and hard drives
· Only 18% use a cloud service for their back up

The survey, which was conducted during February 2014,illustrates how consumers are putting their digital world at risk.

“With the rise of the ‘selfie’ and the increased use of music and videos, many consumers would be completely lost if something happened to their digital device. But unfortunately most don’t realize the dangers until its too late. Consumers need to be educated on the importance of backing up and protecting their data and how easy it is to implement a solution,” said Nat Maple Head of Consumer, Acronis.

“By paying a minimal cost now, users can avoid losing their valuable, irreplaceable data on their devices, let alone the device itself. Disasters happen but our suggestion is, don’t wait untill it’s too late, back up now!”
