OpenStack is an open source cloud computing platform that allows the management of large pools of compute, storage, and networking resources in cloud environments. The OpenStack project is a global collaboration of developers and technologists working on an open standard platform for both public and private clouds.

Wind River is helping the industry apply OpenStack to network functions virtualization (NFV) environments for carrier infrastructure. By leveraging its deep experience in telecommunications, Wind River is able to develop extensions to OpenStack that can address carrier needs that are required to maintain the level of carrier grade service level agreements (SLAs). Current OpenStack efforts are designed to meets the rigorous demands of communications networks, but will be applicable across other industries as well. Wind River plans to work closely with customers and actively support the open source community.

"The OpenStack community is laying important groundwork to advance cloud technology and create a collaborative platform from which to build multiple solutions," said Mike Langlois, general manager of the communications business at Wind River. "Through our extensive open source expertise and technologies, including our carrier grade Wind River Linux, Wind River Open Virtualization, and also OpenStack, we can help bring the latest open source advancements and carrier grade extensions to the OpenStack community framework."

"We are excited to see open source champions such as Wind River helping to advance the adoption of OpenStack. The community will benefit from their rich technology heritage that draws both embedded and deep vertical industry expertise," said Heidi Bretz, director of business development at the OpenStack Foundation. "Wind River is a welcome addition to the OpenStack community."

With decades of experience in the telecommunications industry, Wind River provides proven technologies for carrier grade requirements, including the industry leading Wind River Linux. A hard requirement for current telecommunications and future NFV applications, carrier grade is a must for operators and service providers as they cannot deploy applications unless they maintain industry-accepted levels of high availability, reliability, and SLA performance. Through its unique mix of embedded, vertical industry and open source expertise, Wind River provides customers with cutting-edge open source innovations combined with the confidence that comes with industry-leading commercial-grade offerings and global support.

Founded in 2012, the OpenStack Foundation is an independent body providing shared resources to help achieve the OpenStack mission by protecting, empowering, and promoting OpenStack software and its community.
