Copel Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Companhia Paranaense de Energia (Copel), has selected Coriant coherent 100G transmission technology to significantly increase the speed and performance of its fiber optic backbone network. Based on Coriant’s high-performance hiT 7300 intelligent transport platform initially deployed by Copel Telecom in 2010, the network upgrade to 100G will enable Copel Telecom to cost-effectively future proof its infrastructure network and continue to deliver affordable and high-quality broadband services throughout the state of Paraná.
“We are committed to bringing our customers innovative and affordable Internet access services such as our fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) offering, while at the same time ensuring that they enjoy a superior broadband experience as their application needs evolve over time,” said Adir Hannouche, chief executive officer, Copel Telecom.

“A robust backbone network allows us to support economic development and information exchange for both large and small enterprises, whose service needs also continue to evolve. We chose Coriant’s proven solution because it offers an exceptional level of flexibility in the provisioning of high-capacity services, and an easy upgrade path to transmission speeds of 100G and beyond,” added Antonio Carlos W. P. Melo, chief technology officer, Copel Telecom.

Copel Telecom’s backbone network provides the resilient foundation for a wide range of consumer and business services and applications, including ultra-fast Internet access, triple play, bandwidth-on-demand, carrier wholesale, cloud computing, and data center interconnect. The network boasts over 9,330 km of fiber optic cables deployed between its main ring and urban radials (self-sustained cables), totaling more than 30,000 km and reaching more than 400 cities in south Brazil. Optimized for high-performance, low latency coherent optical transmission, the hiT 7300 multi-haul platform adds significant scalability, reliability and intelligence to Copel Telecom’s fiber optic backbone network, at a low cost of ownership. The network-wide upgrade to 100G, which is ongoing, is enabled by Coriant software intelligence.

“We are pleased to work closely with Copel Telecom and help them advance their broadband network with best-in-class 100G technology,” said Uwe Fischer, chief technology officer, Coriant. “Our future-proof solution will allow Copel Telecom to continue delivering reliable broadband services to residential customers, while at the same time enable them to expand their high-capacity service offerings for data-intensive business customers such as financial institutions, content providers, and digital media providers.”
