Thinking outside the box

When Emerson Control Techniques Ltd commissioned SKT Services to provide an energy efficient cooling system for its server room, Weatherite Building Services (WBS) was commissioned to provide a solution that achieved significant savings in energy costs without impacting on the available floor space within the building.

Growing businesses invariably meet new challenges with every forward step: When Emerson Control Techniques installed additional servers, they needed to upgrade the cooling system for their server room but the footprint of the new servers severely restricted the space available for the new cooling units.


Electrical contractors SKT Services knew they had to think outside the box - quite literally, so instead of compromising on performance or reliability they worked with WBS to provide a solution that met the brief precisely.


Weatherite's direct free cooling units utilise outside air as the primary cooling medium, with the benefit of reduced energy consumption and lower running costs. In addition, the units incorporate a packaged refrigerant cooling system, provided as automatic back-up during high ambient conditions. Unit capacities range from 8 - 125kW.


Uniquely WBS was able to design the units so that they could be installed externally - achieving optimum energy efficiency without impacting on available floor area. Their installation team also ensured that the process was achieved while the server room remained operational and secure throughout.
