transtec expands its solutions portfolio with Nimble Storage's “Next Generation Storage”

By applying patented storage architecture, new transtec partner Nimble Storage integrates the exceptional performance of flash with high-capacity hard disks. These IP storage systems are ideal for complex applications like virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), server virtualization or Microsoft Exchange and SQL servers.

In conjunction with Nimble Storage, one of the most innovative suppliers on the storage market, transtec provides support for big-data applications by handling the increasing influx of data. As of immediate effect, transtec will meet the associated and growing demands on storage performance, scalability and data protection with Nimble Storage’s iSCSI SAN storage solutions. The manufacturer’s CS series overcomes the old problems that traditional storage architecture faces. To date, when selecting a storage system users had to decide between performance and capacity. transtec allows users to select both.

Hybrid HDD and SSD storage solutions combine the best of both worlds
The secret lies at the core of the Nimble storage architecture – the specially designed and patented “Cache Accelerated Sequential Layout” (CASL). This is a hybrid disk concept that combines high-capacity hard disks with low-latency and high-performance Solid State Disks (SSDs). Flash fulfils the demands of randomly distributed read processes, hard disks, of sequential processes and capacity requirements. The upshot is a range of new functions, such as dynamic caching, write-optimized data layout, as well as consistent data compression. Dynamic caching speeds up read access by storing a copy of indexed, frequently retrieved and therefore actively “hot” data and meta data in the flash cache. Throughput also increases during read access, with latency periods dropping. The write-optimized data layout combines all write access procedures into one single sequential write process. The CASL architecture and the overall design of the Nimble storage systems are pre-destined to meet the cost and performance challenges of virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI).

Data compression in real time
Real-time data compression reduces capacities by 30 to 70 percent, without compromising performance or latency time. Furthermore, Nimble Storage uses “Thin Provisioning” to provide more storage capacity than is actually available. As soon as the data is written, dynamic allocation of the capacity takes place. Thin Provisioning also enables more efficient usage of storage capacity and hard disks.

By applying Nimble Storage’s hybrid storage systems, transtec has expanded its solutions portfolio to allow businesses to cut their capital and operational expenses. With comparable or higher performance, they need less storage capacity and have lower requirements regarding space, electricity or cooling.
