Try RUM to manage cloud-bursting

CopperEgg has come up with Real User Monitoring (RUM) as its tool to provide Application Performance Monitoring to help users manage when they need to temporarily graft additional cloud resources

Everyone happily talks about `bursting’ into the cloud, and it is one of the key advantages of utilising cloud services that grabbing additional compute or storage resources as and when needed is both entirely possible and to be recommended. Managing that process however, can be a slightly more complicated issue than someone just saying `let’s do that’.

It is with this firmly in mind that US-based CopperEgg has introduced its Real User Monitoring (RUM) system for cloud-based applications. The target is those businesses looking to move more high-value applications to the cloud. Here, Application Performance Monitoring (APM) is fast becoming a critical tool in ensuring application delivery and uptime across highly diverse, dynamic, distributed environments.

So CopperEgg is addressing this APM need by adding RUM “In the cloud, if your applications are down, your business is down – and everyone knows it. The worst thing you can do is have your customers as the first line of defense”

to to the latest release of its end-to-end cloud performance monitoring solution. This provides complete visibility across servers, websites, applications and end users, whether in public, private or hybrid cloud environments.

A recent survey of 150 IT professionals conducted by the company found the majority of respondents monitor 25 percent or less of their applications, citing cost (31 percent), complexity (31 percent) and time involved (30 percent) as the top three challenges in diagnosing end-to-end application performance issues. The trouble is, according to the company, existing APM tools are too technical, invasive and expensive to deploy widely in production-centric environments.

Fifty percent of respondents regard their current monitoring tools as no better than “fair” in providing effective application diagnostics.

CopperEgg’s RUM solution monitors, troubleshoots and optimises applications in the cloud, connecting the dots between real user experience and infrastructure behaviour. The solution is purpose-built for elastic, burstable cloud environments including Amazon, Rackspace, Windows Azure, and many others. Designed, packaged and priced for production, it allows enterprises to quickly and economically scale their architecture up or down to meet evolving business needs.

It does this by providing a unified dashboard  which gives one-stop monitoring and service level correlation customisable by role or user. It also features an ops-centric design which supports production-wide deployment and operations use cases, an end-to-end stack which gives a holistic view across servers, websites, applications and users, and hybrid cloud coverage to reduce management siloes across public, private and on-premises environments.

Its deep forensics and real-time analysis capabilities are designed topinpoint problem areas and alert users to potential issues in two clicks or less. It also handles broad RUM transaction types, as well as tuning and alerting. This includes AJAX monitoring, APDEX configurability and granular alerting and reporting on response times across geographies and browsers.

Its elastic, self-adapting architecture canmodify automatically in response to operating environment changes, while its third-party integration capabilities leverage existing tools including Chef, Puppet and GitHub.

In addition, CopperEgg’s SaaS delivery model eliminates capital expenses with affordable, pay-as-you-go pricing that provides zero admin installation and configuration, and supports widespread deployment across production applications.

“In the cloud, if your applications are down, your business is down – and everyone knows it. The worst thing you can do is have your customers as the first line of defence,” said Josh Stephens, vice president of product strategy at CopperEgg. “From the C-suite to the DevOps team, CopperEgg gives organisations complete visibility into the health of cloud applications, eliminating costly guesswork and downtime and enabling more strategic activities.”

The CopperEgg RUM solution is available in public beta immediately, with a starter package priced at $70 for 10 servers. General availability begins Dec. 1, 2013, and includes a free 14-day trial.
