A1 Telekom Austria deploys Coriant

A1, the Austrian subsidiary of Telekom Austria Group, has deployed Coriant’s hiT 7300 intelligent optical transport platform to increase the capacity of its network infrastructure and enhance the performance of its converged fixed line and mobile service offerings. A1’s nationwide DWDM backbone network, which recently began commercial operations, provides the resilient foundation for enhanced end-user services by enabling A1 to rapidly deploy service capacity and seamlessly scale to connection speeds of 100 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) and beyond as consumer and business demands for network bandwidth evolve.

“We continue to advance the capabilities of our network infrastructure to ensure the delivery of best-in-class converged services and the highest quality broadband experience for our customers,” said Marcus Grausam, Chief Technical Officer, A1. “We selected Coriant not only for the superior performance of its coherent optical transport system, but also for the embedded system intelligence that allows us to simplify operations, speed the provisioning of network capacity, and adapt to the dynamic, real-time needs of today’s end-user applications.”

A1’s new DWDM network connects Vienna with all major cities in Austria and is designed to support the increasing use of high-bandwidth enterprise and subscriber services and applications, including on-demand high-definition (HD) video streaming, 4G/LTE, broadband access, IP-TV, and cloud computing. The state-of-the-art photonic mesh network is based on Coriant’s industry-leading hiT 7300 DWDM transport system, which allows A1 to support transmission speeds of 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s, maximize utilization of its fiber infrastructure, and reduce overall latency to ensure the highest service performance.

“We are pleased to be a strategic supplier to the Telecom Austria Group and help them unleash the service potential of A1’s intelligent optical network,” said Herbert Merz, Coriant president and chief executive officer. “As demands on backbone networks become more and more unpredictable, network operators like A1 require solutions that can easily scale and adapt to dynamic traffic patterns while delivering the operational benefits that allow them to manage their services more efficiently.”

A1 selected Coriant for its next generation DWDM network based on the hiT 7300’s reputation for performance and stability, as well as key features and benefits that met A1’s application requirements, including:
· Seamless scalability – With a superior system architecture and proven coherent optical transport performance, the hiT 7300 supports the efficient transmission of 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s per wavelength while providing a pragmatic path to higher transmission capacities with advanced capabilities such as increased spectral efficiencies using FlexiGrid technology
· Network flexibility – The hiT 7300’s industry-leading implementation of Colorless, Directionless, and Contentionless Reconfigurable Add-Drop Multiplexer (CDC-ROADM) technology delivers the maximum level of flexibility and adaptability. Complementing this optical layer flexibility is Coriant’s TNMS management system, which allows A1 to centrally manage optical service connections and automate traditionally manual tasks, thereby reducing provisioning times from days to minutes
· Enhanced service performance – With advanced coherent detection capabilities, the hiT 7300 eliminates the need for dispersion-compensating fibers in the network and delivers the low latency performance required for real-time applications such as telemedicine, financial trading, and online gaming.
