Trebled data footprint in 12 months drives managed services investment.

Global consulting engineers Arup – responsible for designing the Sydney Opera House and Pompidou Centre – is protecting corporate data from its 90 offices and 11,000 employees and improving IT efficiency through a new managed back-up service from UK-based Data Continuity Group (DCG).
Like all organisations Arup relies on data such as finance and HR information to operate. DCG’s service for the company – whose projects also include the Beijing Olympics Bird’s Nest and High Speed 1 project – has just gone live and manages all structured data back-up using Symantec’s NetBackup software.

DCG’s expertise and knowledge of NetBackup, guaranteed SLAs and 24/7 support ensures that data is constantly up to date, removing any risk of data loss for Arup.

David Ovenden, EMEA IT Infrastructure Manager, Arup, said, “Protecting data has always been vital to Arup, but our back-up data footprint has tripled in size in the last 12 months - with technology being increasingly critical to our projects we have seen data grow quickly in importance and volume.”

The DCG service will save valuable time for Arup’s IT team and ensure that the most up to date data is secure if any disasters were to befall the company’s live IT infrastructure. DCG also offers a range of cloud back-up and disaster recovery services, but Arup chose to utilise its existing robust back-up infrastructure, outsourcing the management to DCG.

Ovenden continued, “With internal IT resources focused on supporting the business needs every day we decided that a dedicated external resource was the best way of ensuring that all our data was backed up securely and continually. DCG’s accredited engineers have excellent NetBackup knowledge, but beyond that they operate a highly competent Network Operations Centre with the capability to understand our entire network infrastructure.”

Alan Back, Director, DCG Group said, “Arup is indicative of many organisations we’re working with for whom data is both growing in volume and criticality to the extent that a dedicated and guaranteed resource is required to ensure its protection isn’t left to chance.”

DCG is a Symantec NetBackup Specialist Data Protection Master partner and also holds premium alliances with EVault, NetApp, Dell, VMware, Microsoft and HP.
