Silver Peak integrates WAN Optimisation software with Dell Branch Data Centre-in-a-Box

Silver Peak Systems has announced integration of its virtual WAN optimisation software with the new Dell PowerEdge VRTX converged IT solution for branch offices. Silver Peak extends the Dell VRTX high-performance “data centre-in-a-box” capabilities with up to 20x faster communications to additional remote offices, data centres and the cloud over any Wide Area Network (WAN).

As users become more distributed and application requirements expand, it becomes more difficult to deliver IT services to branch offices. Dell PowerEdge VRTX addresses these challenges by converging server, storage and networking functionality into a single, office-optimised chassis. However, a challenge remains when users in branch offices need to communicate with other remote users, access centralised applications in data centres, or connect to cloud services. Silver Peak WAN optimisation software complements the Dell VRTX platform to solve these challenges and overcome limited WAN bandwidth, distance, and poor network quality that hinders branch office productivity and data mobility performance.
“Running a mix of different hardware in today’s branch office is inefficient, costly, and no longer necessary,” said Brian Payne, executive director for PowerEdge servers at Dell. “The Dell PowerEdge VRTX redefines the remote office data centre by reducing hardware sprawl and converging best-in-class server, storage and networking in a compact footprint for the branch. Silver Peak understands this model well and its software-based WAN optimisation complements the Dell VRTX to help customers reduce costs of long-distance networking and data acceleration between branch offices, data centres and the cloud.”

Silver Peak is a Dell Global Preferred Partner for WAN optimisation in more than 30 countries. Silver Peak today provides real-time network optimisation techniques into Dell data centre switching, campus networking, server, and storage products, and is also proven to lower costs and improve recovery point objectives (RPO) for offsite backup and disaster recovery when complementing Dell Compellent and EqualLogic solutions.
For the Dell VRTX integration, Silver Peak conducted extensive testing and developed joint best practices with Dell to deliver the optimal data acceleration software solution. The Silver Peak VX software runs on the Dell PowerEdge VRTX system using either Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware vSphere Hypervisors, and provides all of Silver Peak’s best-in-class WAN optimisation features and functionality. The Silver Peak software for Dell VRTX can scale to gigabits-per-second (Gbps) of WAN capacity, which translates into LAN-like performance for traditional branch office applications like e-mail, Web, and file sharing.

“Our software-based approach to WAN optimisation has uniquely enabled us to collaborate with Dell in this highly-integrated fashion,” said Rick Tinsley, president and CEO of Silver Peak. “Deploying Silver Peak software on Dell VRTX can save customers up to 80 percent in data acceleration costs compared to deploying a competitor’s stand alone WAN optimisation hardware in a branch. We are excited about these synergies with Dell that will help more customers improve the performance of their remote office applications while reducing branch office IT costs.”
