MariaDB plc has expanded its horizons by acquiring SkySQL Inc., known for its AI-driven, serverless database-as-a-service (DBaaS) platform. Originally a part of the MariaDB family, SkySQL distinguished itself as an autonomous entity in 2023, further refining its product capabilities over time. This strategic move sees SkySQL's DBaaS offering reintegrated into MariaDB's portfolio, aligning with the company's ambition to deliver versatile and scalable cloud solutions.

The integration with MariaDB Cloud not only fulfills customer expectations for flexible deployment options but also offers a blend of self-managed and fully managed cloud solutions. MariaDB Cloud now promises comprehensive support for all three major public cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. A notable enhancement is the serverless mode, which enables developers to kick-start cloud-native and AI-centric applications efficiently.

Rohit de Souza, CEO at MariaDB, highlighted, “Our customers have made it clear that they want flexibility, and they need powerful, reliable database solutions wherever their business takes them – on premises, in the cloud or in hybrid environments. Acquiring SkySQL helps accelerate plans and adds further innovation to MariaDB Cloud. It’s a strategic investment in our customers and a decisive step to enhance our ability to provide the comprehensive, modern, world-class database platform our customers need to thrive and maintain a competitive edge.”

The partnership taps into the growing trend of enterprises shifting to cloud-based databases. As per industry forecasts, businesses are keen to embrace cloud solutions for greater scalability and cost-efficiency. The MariaDB Enterprise Platform, complemented by SkySQL's sophistication in elasticity and AI capabilities, emerges as a leading solution for seamless database management and innovation.

Vikas Mathur, Chief Product Officer at MariaDB, adds: "By bringing SkySQL's DBaaS into the MariaDB portfolio, we are immediately addressing our customers needs while also gaining a robust foundation to make MariaDB the default option for building GenAI applications."

The acquisition ushers in the entire SkySQL team into the fold, enhancing MariaDB's product engineering and support capabilities with enriched DBaaS expertise. Jags Ramnarayan, SkySQL's CTO, lauded this merger as a 'win for our customers', facilitating accelerated innovation across global markets.

This acquisition follows MariaDB's recent acquisition of Galera Cluster and launch of a revamped MariaDB Enterprise Platform, which was recognised with awards for its database and AI proficiency. As MariaDB continues its momentum, the SkySQL acquisition marks another milestone in its strategic growth journey.
