Global Switch partners in Hong Kong

Following the signing of a landmark cooperation agreement on 25 April 2017, China Telecom Global (CTG), a subsidiary of China Telecom Corporation Limited ? one of the world’s largest providers of integrated telecommunication services; and Daily-Tech, a developer and operator of data centre infrastructure across China, have partnered with Global Switch, the leading owner, developer and operator of large-scale, carrier and cloud neutral data centres in Europe and Asia Pacific, to launch Global Switch’s new HK$5 billion data centre in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong.

The newly developed facility will become one of Hong Kong’s largest carrier and cloud neutral multi-customer data centres offering a network-dense environment with low latency connectivity. It provides a full range of cloud and managed services to customers supported by highly resilient power and cooling infrastructure and state-of-the-art security systems.

The services and facilities available at the data centre represent a significant step forward for Hong Kong as it develops into a regional technology and innovation hub. It also demonstrates the commitment of CTG, Daily-Tech and Global Switch to providing customers with industry-leading facilities and solutions, and driving leadership in telecommunications, cloud and managed services.

Located in the fast-developing Tseung Kwan O (TKO) Industrial Estate, part of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) development, the new data centre is highly secure and scalable. Once fully developed, it will provide 71,000 square meters (765,000 square feet) of gross space with 100MVA utility power supply. Adjacent to the Tseung Kwan O cable landing station and close to both the other major submarine cable landing stations and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange hosting facility, the data centre will offer customers a hub for growth and a gateway into one of Asia’s most dynamic regions.

Energy efficient and sustainable, the facility has a chilled water cooling system that reduces its carbon footprint, targeting a market-leading PUE of 1.5, and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating, and a Hong Kong Green Building Council’s BEAM Plus gold rating. The data centre is designed for ease of use, with flexible loading dock facilities, storage and staging facilities, unboxing rooms, conferencing and meeting rooms and a state-of-the-art board room and training areas.

The data centre will deliver a cloud and IT ecosystem at an unparalleled scale in Hong Kong.  Customers will have access to a variety of leading products, services and features, including: resilient power and cooling solutions; colocation services, networking services (internet, MPLS, IEPL, CDN and cross-connect services); state-of-the-art biometric security, network security services including anti-DDoS; and supporting services (24x7x365 customer hotline, BCP seats, stage room, storage and project management). To further meet the needs of customers, the data centre is targeting ISO 9001, 14001, 27001, 50001 and OHSAS 18001 international management standards.

Deng Xiaofeng, CEO of China Telecom Global, said: “We’re delighted to achieve the significant milestone of launching services at this data centre as a result of our strategic cooperation with Global Switch and Daily-Tech. CTG is focused on leading the development of world-class network services to facilitate our customers’ demands for globalisation and digitalisation. We see tremendous business potential in the coming years as more and more people will be connected to the Internet. Leveraging our cooperation partners’ complementary strengths and strategic collaboration, we will continue to provide high-value services to build a brighter future for globalisation and informatisation.”

Li Qiang, Chairman of Daily-Tech, added: “Global Switch’s Data Centre in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong, is the first on-the-ground project between the three parties since the signing of the cooperation framework. The successful delivery of the project means that the trio of businesses has taken a powerful concrete step forward, underpinning the value, vision and viability of our strategic cooperative blueprint. The data centre will provide professional software and hardware services to both domestic and foreign customers in Hong Kong, and will play an important role in delivering China’s Belt and Road initiative in terms of providing information services.

“As Daily-Tech’s second data centre project in Hong Kong, Global Switch Hong Kong will be able to provide sustainable information services for more clients via state-of-the-art facilities, professional management and outstanding operation, jointly provided by the three businesses. Looking ahead, we will continue our cooperative efforts with China Telecom Global and Global Switch, and endeavour to expand our footprint globally.”

John Corcoran, CEO of Global Switch, said: “We are proud to launch our eleventh and flagship data centre, Global Switch Hong Kong, and unveil its facilities and services in collaboration with our world-class cooperation partners CTG and Daily-Tech. The new data centre will be one of Hong Kong’s largest carrier and cloud neutral facilities and one of the region’s most advanced. Its state-of-the-art carrier and cloud capabilities offer our current and future customers unprecedented opportunities to streamline and grow their businesses.

“With today’s launch of Stage 1 of the data centre, we will increase the size of Global Switch’s global portfolio to 320,000 square meters (3,450,000 square feet). In response to market demand, construction of Stage 2 is already underway and it is scheduled to become operational in 2019.

Global Switch is honoured and excited to be playing a central role in the continued development of Hong Kong, and its expansion as a core hub for China and the rest of the region in IT infrastructure and cloud computing.”
