Jersey launches IoT ‘Lab’ to enhance testbed capabilities

The island of Jersey is set to become a testbed of choice for organisations looking for the ideal environment to trial Internet of Things products and services.

Known primarily as an international finance centre, Jersey is a self-contained country with full gigabit fibre to all homes and businesses, three 4G networks, two dedicated IoT networks and has just signed off on investment for a dedicated Internet of Things Lab (IoT Lab).

The opportunity to join up government and infrastructure owners in a highly connected but self-contained environment has already started to attract companies to the island where projects can be tested and ultimately easily scaled-up for global production. Digital Jersey, the organisation tasked with growing the island’s digital sector, has been working closely with government, utilities, local technology experts and companies who are keen to work with the Island to develop an IoT strategy that solves business challenges while making life better for the local community.

CEO of Digital Jersey, Tony Moretta said, ‘“We are delighted to be adding to our testbed offering by creating a new lab as the focal point for businesses to collaborate and share resources, apply research to real-life scenarios, and turn IoT ideas into commercial ventures. The IoT Lab will offer access to world-leading internet speeds, a data platform for analysing large data sets collected from IoT sensors around Jersey, and workshop space for building and testing IoT devices. The new Lab will build on the success of the Digital Jersey Hub and Barclays Eagle Lab which are already well established digital resources in the island.”

The island invested in full fibre direct into every home and business, and is now looking at building all the different types of IoT networks, including LoRa, NBIoT and Sigfox for ultimate connectivity. Digital Jersey has also joined the Industry Specification Group on City Digital Profile (ISG CDP) within the standards association, ETSI, signalling a serious intent to play a leading role in developing the roadmap for smart cities.

At just 45 square miles, but containing its own national government, utilities, airport, port and a diverse range of economic sectors from finance to farming, tourism to retail, Jersey’s 100,000 strong population provide a unique closed user-group in a connected micro-country.

Tony Moretta adds, ‘There are many benefits to being a self-contained island, and one of them is agility, influence and access to data. We are able to move fast and have relations with all the key utilities and influencers in Jersey so that whatever the project, we can make it happen, whether that’s a fix for a transport issue, waste collection, air pollution or health, and of course finance.’

Digital Jersey is currently putting together a testbed package and finalising the new IoT Lab, ready for a full 2018 launch.
