HNS migrates Penguin to mega data centre

Hub Network Services (HNS), Bristol, thas successfully migrated Internet Service Provider (ISP) Penguin to NGD’s South Wales mega data centre. This follows Cardiff-based Penguin’s requirement to relocate its rack servers to a modern colocation facility which also offered lower costs and a more convenient location.

A critical requirement of the project was avoiding changes to the extensive IP address base managed by Penguin on behalf of its customers who rely on various Internet-based services including those for web and email hosting as well as remote support.

Penguin called on HNS, a colocation and network infrastructure provider, to devise a strategy which would preserve and maintain the integrity of customer IP addresses during the two week data centre transition period. HNS’ solution was to implement a VPN-based IP tunnel which securely encapsulated and routed all IP traffic simultaneously between the two sites.

“HNS’ innovative IP tunnelling solution and highly responsive technical support ensured Penguin continued to provide seamless service provision to our customers throughout the data centre migration period,” said Chris Hemmings, Managing Director of Penguin. “With zero downtime involved and by eliminating the need for renumbering of IP addresses, HNS saved us valuable time and avoided inconveniencing our customers in any way.”

John Volanthen, CEO of HNS, added: “Managing Penguin’s IP address base during the transition phase was a complex business requirement and entailed some highly specialist networking expertise. Following their move to NGD, HNS has also been pleased to provide Penguin with additional network redundancy through direct connections to our diverse IP transit network.”
