Spectra Logic now integrates IBM® Spectrum Scale™, previously known as General Parallel File System (GPFS), in its Spectra® BlackPearl® Converged Storage System, delivering an affordable, robust archive that eliminates vendor lock-in. The combined offering from Spectra Logic and ArcaStream is a complete storage solution from production, or primary, storage all the way down to the deepest storage layer.

Combining ArcaStream's certified client, known as Ngenea, with BlackPearl enables GPFS users to store data using object storage on disk, tape, public and/or private cloud, within multi-user workflows. The solution provides scale-out storage and data management with intelligent automatic tiering, data analytics, and secure global collaboration tools. An affordable archive for high performance computing (HPC) environments, this solution eliminates the need for expensive proprietary hardware and hierarchical storage management technology.

ArcaStream provides customers across a range of industries with innovative, made-to-order software-defined storage solutions that give them a competitive edge at a viable price point. IBM Spectrum Scale storage is a high-performance clustered file system, which overcomes what are often highly complex challenges in the data centre that involve the integration of different technologies from multiple vendors. ArcaStream developed a tailored BlackPearl-based client for its file system, which has now achieved certification.

Our customers increasingly demand innovative ways to move data seamlessly between disk, tape and the cloud,” said Barry Evans, CTO and co-founder at ArcaStream. “We discovered Spectra through one of our own end users, who couldn’t recommend the BlackPearl highly enough. Spectra Logic’s solutions integrate seamlessly with our Ngenea technology, which will greatly benefit our joint customers.”

IBM Spectrum Scale is a flexible, software-defined storage solution that can be deployed as high performance file storage or a cost optimised large-scale content repository, providing both high performance and flexibility to enterprises.

“Customers with highly complex deployments demand low cost, high performance, and ease of use and integration when they implement storage solutions,” said Matt Starr, CTO at Spectra Logic. “BlackPearl is now GPFS enabled, which is a critical requirement for the HPC market. Customers who deploy this joint solution will not need to deploy any other storage tier.”
