Future-proofing MongoDB deployments

European innovation helps businesses securely deploy NoSQL databases to avoid hacks.

Severalnines has updated its ClusterControl product to help developers securely deploy and manage NoSQL database, MongoDB. Having developed on the offering over the past year, it delivers Severalnines’ vision to de-risk MongoDB deployments, and thus help avoid ransom hacks, whether on-premise or in the cloud.

ClusterControl helps organisations manage the most popular open source databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB through one interface. This negates the need to use disparate management tools and helps users avoid vendor lock-in. MongoDB users often have to use a variety of tools to achieve their requirements, so Severalnines spent a year developing new features for the full management and secure deployment of MongoDB.

The free community version of ClusterControl, which allows users to deploy MongoDB Community Edition as well as Percona Server for MongoDB, also provides users access to the ClusterControl Developer Studio. This tool provides a set of monitoring and performance advisors to be used during deployment. The community version also includes a point-and-click wizard, which makes the manual deployment of MongoDB obsolete.

Added benefits of using ClusterControl to deploy MongoDB include:
  1. Security - ClusterControl removes human error during deployment and provides users access to a suite of features, automatically protecting MongoDB from cyber threats. ClusterControl advisors are in place testing whether authentication has been enabled on MongoDB deployments. It also tests for weak passwords and admin roles which should not be included. Additional checks can be added by developers using the integrated Developer Studio.
  2. Monitoring - A unified view of all sharded environments across all data centres, which lets users drill down into individual nodes. MongoDB Advisors proactively check for potential issues in the underlying OS and storage subsystems, as well as replication between cluster nodes. The ClusterControl Developer Studio also lets users extend the features of ClusterControl to add more MongoDB functionality.
  3. Management - A standard ClusterControl feature which automatically repairs and recovers broken nodes. Scaling functionality enables users to add and remove nodes, resize instances and clone production databases. In addition, ClusterControl also enables consistent back-ups of sharded database clusters. This is accompanied by a single interface to automate the usually mixed database environments of enterprises, who use the top three most popular open source databases.

Vinay Joosery, CEO, Severalnines, said, “Our ambition with ClusterControl has always been to provide cost-effective access to best of breed database management tools, usable by almost anyone to securely deploy the most popular open source databases. However, with our extensive experience with MongoDB, we predicted individuals were deploying insecure default databases and knew they could have avoided security problems by using our tools and functionality. With this new version of ClusterControl, we’ve delivered our vision to provide developers and DBAs the tools necessary to safely, securely, and automatically deploy MongoDB databases at no cost to the user. On top of that, those in charge of deploying and maintaining databases can also use ClusterControl to manage their relational databases, which make up a big part of today’s enterprise infrastructure.”
